Kalrayan Hills near SalemKalrayan Hills is situated in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It forms a major range of hills in the Eastern Ghats of Tamil Nadu. It lies on the western part of Kallakurichi taluk.
Along with Javadi, Panchaimalai and Shevaroy hills, Kalyaran hills separate Kaveri river basin to South from the Palar river basin to North.
Relief of Kalrayan Hills:The height of the hills varies from 2000 feet to 3000 feet and extends over an area of 1095 km2. The hills include several districts of Tamil Nadu and ranging to northeast from Salem. The hills separate Salem and Villupuram. The Kalrayan Hills are separated into two parts - the northern part known as Chinna (“little”) Kalrayans and the southern part is recognized as Periya (“big”) Kalrayans. The altitude of Chinna Kalrayans is around 2700 feet average whereas 4000 feet average for Periya Kalrayan.
The range of hills is quite smooth and soils are fertile for growth of plant. Above 800 meters deciduous forests can be found and at an altitude of 400 meters scrub jungles are found. Another stunted evergreen forest named ‘Sholas’ at a high altitude can be found growing on isolated plateau. The forest patches are unspoiled.

Megam Falls:This waterfall is situated 5km from Kachirayapalayam, Kallakurichi. Mainly, rainy season begins from July to October which comes under the South East monsoon and this hill does not fall under the part of Western Ghat. The Megan fall looks beautiful between the months of September to December. This fall lies under the district Villupuram.
Tourists can have a great experience in Periyar falls which is situated approximately 15km away from Periyar Dam Gomukhi Falls. Periyar Falls is situated near Vellimalai village. Normally, this falls has less water flow but it is flooded during monsoon. People from nearby area come here to take bath in the falls during monsoons. Manimukthnadhi Dam has a maximum height of 20 feets and holds 737 Metric Cube feet of water. It was established in 1970.The dam is situated near Agarakottalam Village. This dam is constructed across the Manimudha River. This dam dampens Villupuram and Cuddalore districts. This dam is situated around 10 kilometers from Kallakurichi.
