As far as technological development is concerned, Salem has marched with the changing times. There are a number of IT Parks in the district. You must be knowing about SEZ (Special Economic Zone) spread across 164.26 acres on Salem-Bangalore Expressway. IT SEZ is being promoted by PPP mode (Public Private Partnership). There is an exclusive Electrical and Electronics Industrial Estate in the Suramangalam area of Salem city. Tamil Nadu government and ELCOT are planning to establish an IT park in Salem. SAIL is planning a Steel SEZ inside the Salem Steel plant.

Mineral Reserves in Salem

Salem has been derived from Sanskrit word 'Sailam' which means mountain. True to its name, Salem is actually surrounded by hills. These hills have reserves of minerals, iron ore, limestone, bauxite, precious stones and aluminium. Iron ore mines are present in Kanjamalai, Kavuthimalai and Vediappanmalai. Salem has one of the largest magnesite, and bauxite and also iron ore deposits in India. There are oil deposits in various regions in the district.

Infrastructural development in Salem has been good. It has attracted tourists in large numbers from all parts of the globe. There is a Hydro Electric Power generation unit in Mettur near Salem.

There are close to 75,000 hand looms in Salem churning out superior quality sari, dhoti and angavasthram from silk and cotton yarn. There are more than 125 spinning mills, modern weaving units, waste spinning units, small scale hand dying units, Hand loom societies and garment units in Salem! Kondalampatti is a small town in Salem district famous for its cotton and silk hand loom products.

There are a number of Power Loom units in Gugai, Ammapet, Jalakandapuram, Attayampatti, Vennandur, Komarapalayam Pallipalayam,  Magudanchavadi, Rasipuram, and Ellampillai. Salem is 5th largest city in Tamil Nadu state. It is known for export of cotton products. Coimbatore-Erode-Salem stretch was well known for Industries and Textile processing and it is announced as Coimbatore-Salem Industrial Corridor.

Salem -The Land of Sago

Sago industries produce sago foods and starch. The entire district cultivates tapioca, a raw material for the sago industries. Tapioca processing units are also based in and around Salem. In the year 1981, Salem Starch and Sago Manufacturers Service Industrial Co-operative Society Ltd (SAGOSERVE) was established for promoting growth of sago industry. It is a leader as far as production of tapioca is concerned. It also tops the list as Sandal wood repository of Tamil Nadu.

The steel plant produces cold rolled stainless steel, Hot rolled stainless steel/carbon steel, authentic, ferritic, martensitic and low-nickel stainless steel in the form of coils and sheets. Another steel plant is Southern Iron and Steel Company Ltd. which is a joint venture with JSW Steel and is the first integrated steel plant of India. It is based near Salem and produces TMT corrosion resistant bars/alloy steel. There are industries such as The Madras Aluminum Company Ltd (MALCO) - which has a state-of-the-art coal-based Captive Power Plant.
